Final pictures.

Overall, these are the final pieces that show the concept how the mosaic would look like. Although this is showing the pieces in a digital format, it shows a clear understanding of how the pieces would come together, as well as understanding what pieces would need to come together/apart more to make the more detailed elements stand out.

By mocking a few up on a wall existing at the factory, it shows what it would look like if it was to be placed. I would love to have extended this further in making a mini piece, or even a complete final piece in the exact scale if there was more time. However, I feel by showing the concept of the mosaic pictures in this format is clear enough to suggest that I have met the brief in the idea of being fruitful and encouraging employees to notice the concept also.

Stage 1 of my final pictures.  

After I had used the previous method to apply to all the rest of my pictures, these were the final outcome. I thought how I could relate this further to the idea of being fruitful and getting the employees to understand how valuable the fruit really is.

I decided to mock up on each board a small phrase, which can easily be read to those who may not be able to speak perfect English. I thought this would be a good concept to think about also on the rooms for development on the mosaic pieces. It could be possible that each board could have the typography written in different languages, however that could run the risk of the message not being clear enough to read.

Making my final pieces to present – Stage 1

I had a go at the tutorial that I had found and I tried to apply it to one of my final sketches. The first stage was planting and growing the seeds of the ftuit, so I started off with drawing a rough sketch then rendering it in Photoshop.

I spent a long time trying to follow the tutorial steps, changing my methods such as:

  • Adding colour before / after
  • Taking away the lines
  • Trying to get the mosaic tile feel

All of these unfortunately did not work. I spent a long time trying to make the tutorial work with my final piece, however because I have some very fine bits of detail, it was not going to work. I then tried to adapt the tutorial and apply bits of it into my final design. Again, it continued to not work how I had wanted it to.

I tried to make the tiles myself, trying to cut out squares, then trying to freestyle the lines, by this point I was beginning to feel I was not going to get a final piece I was happy with up to present.

I remembered the Stained Glass effect on the filter option, and after playing around with that, I figured this would be the best option to get my picture to look like a mosaic in its simplest form using Photoshop. I applied different types of tiled effects to give the page some variation, making some areas of tiles bigger than others, which seemed to work really well.

Although it would have been nice to make the mosaic tiles myself, it was too difficult to produce in the time frame I have got. Instead, using this method, the picture seems to look how I envisioned it to if it was a real mosaic. The difference in the sizes of the tiles gives a much more clear vision on what to expect if you were to use a variety of materials to make the mosaic.

Roy Lichtenstein and George Seurat.

Roy Lichtenstein and George Seurat are two artists from different eras, however their styles of work are very similar. Both of them use strokes and patterns to make the image, rather than using a blend or block of colour in one area. Both of these artists have influenced me to think about the idea of mosaics, and how you can use patterns of colour to make an image.

What I like especially with them both is the abstract feel in the pictures. Despite Lichtenstein uses harsh lines to outline the pictures, the detail inside are very minimal, using dots or lines to blend two block colours into one. Similarly to Seurat’s work, his blends of colours next to each other bring the picture together as you look at it from afar.

I love how the images up close may not be as clear to see than if you were to look at it from a set distance away. This is because the eye merges the colours together, creating an illusion of tone without the picture needing to do it for you. This reminds me a lot of the mosaic idea that I want to go with, alongside with the experiments I have done. By experimenting with the sizes and distances of the patterns using Photoshop, the image became clearer to see as you saw it from afar, rather than if you was to focus on a small area.

Mosaic making inspiration.

I found this tutorial whilst researching other methods of producing a mosaic piece using Photoshop. This tutorial is a very time consuming piece, however it has inspired me to want to try and have a go with my own drawings.
What I intend to do, is draw my stages up, scan them in and use it as the base template for this tutorial, which if it goes well after one attempt, I will use this method for the rest of the stages as my final piece.

I have decided that my final piece will be a mock up of what the pictures would look like if they were to be made in real life. In order to make this look as realistic as possible, I need to think of a way to do this. What I have decided on doing, is using Photoshop to manipulate my images to look like mosaic pieces (or as close to) as if that’s how it will look like in real life.

I played around using some of the sketches that I did to get some ideas, as well as use some of the pictures that I took when I visited the factory. The two main filters that I found effective were Crystallise and Stained Glass. The Mosaic filter I felt did not give it the look and feel that I wanted for my final piece, and therefore I left it out after the last few images, because it continuously did not seem to work.

Both the Crystallise and Stained Glass filter seemed to work really well with both sets of images. They both worked well with photographs and drawings.

What I found interesting, was that the more detail that was in the picture, the bigger the ‘tiles’ needed to be to try and blend the tones more together. This was because too many coloured tiles trying to blend together made the image look too abstract and confusing.

I want my mosaic to look abstract, but also clear to see the image when you view it from a distance. Because I want the employees to see and appreciate the image that they have created, I want every corner to have enough detail to keep them interested, but not so much detail that they are put off looking at it because it is too confusing to the eye to make out what it is.

The journey of fruit and beyond.

 

For my mosaic, I want to portray the idea of a journey happening in the image, showing the process of the fruit being made and the people behind the process of it. I originally thought of having one big picture to portray this, but the idea of having a series of mosaics spread out across the factory tells a greater story.

I thought it would be a good idea to present up to 10 large-scale mosaic pieces showing the journey of the fruit being grown, picked, deported, cut, packaged and sold. This will help the employees to understand how the process happens and to show how valuable it really is.

By creating a story, it becomes far more personal for the employees and the production of the fruit. Subconsciously thinking, it will help them to remember the story, and with the mosaics spread across the factory, the workers will see the story as they walk through the factory.

The process of how I want the journey to go would be: 

Because there appears to be quite a few steps in the process of this, I might combine a few of the steps together to show the story in more than one way on the mosaic, meaning there is more to look at. What I did was I merged a few of the stages together using the red pen; this would therefore create more to look at on the mosaic pieces.

 

Mosaics.

Mosaics are essentially a piece of art made from small tiles, gems or any decorative piece. A mosaic originally is made from a template that is underneath, and you simply work over the top in different patterns to create a beautiful abstract piece. Mosaics are quite time consuming to do, depending on how small your pieces are, and how big you picture is. Generally, having a team of people to do it makes the process much easier.

Some of the essential materials to use with the mosaic pieces are:

  • This is a fluid that is used to essentially ‘fill the gaps’ between the tiles.
  • Thinset Mortar. This is used for outside and/or wet conditions that are used like glue to stick the pieces down. This is especially important for my project, because the conditions at the factory are extremely wet and cold in the majority of the place.

What I find inspiring about mosaics is that you can make a mosaic out of any material, using the example of a toaster being made out of 2,500 pieces of cooked toast.

From using these examples as inspiration, I would like to create a story with my idea of the mosaic. My next step is to research images about fruit waste, the journey of fruit, as well as the stories of employees and producers. The benefit of having a mosaic piece to do for this project is you can incorporate so many stories in one or a series of pieces, making something far more memorable than just a campaign.

What games do you like to play?

Statistics researchI thought of doing a poll questionnaire to find out a little bit more on what people like to play. I thought this would be a good source of research to find out what takes people’s interest. The black ticks were adults opinions, the red ticks were from a younger audience.

By only giving them a selection of ideas, everyone had to choose one of them. The black ticks were the opinions of adults; the red ticks were the opinions of children. In getting the opinion of both adults and children, it would be better for me to compare what takes an individuals interest.

Surprisingly, I found out that the majority of ticks in the selected boxes were coming from games that require teamwork or working with another person. Anything independent was rarely, or hardly at all, chosen.

This was a really important insight for me to notice, as this has enabled me to think about how I can interact with the workers through teamwork, rather than enabling them to do something independently.

Going back onto the drawings of ideas I had come up with, I don’t feel inclined to want to come up with a campaign on a poster, animation or anything that just displays information for them to look at. As an individual, it is not something you can talk about in sheer confidence. By creating some kind of interaction/game for my idea, it would provide easier communication in both verbal and non-verbal ways.

The Crofton School mosaic.

Back in 2007, I was given the opportunity to participate in the mosaic that still stands outside the reception of my junior school, Crofton. The mosaic was in collaboration with Spinnaker Trust over 4 weeks. The picture resembled young pupils travelling to school, learning and playing.

Each class would take it in turns in putting together a segment of mosaic, whether it is a tile or jewels, to create a beautiful masterpiece. 11 years later looking at it, it felt like no time had gone by.

The mosaic piece came to my mind as I thought back on a previous memory, and the idea sparked. The emotions I felt when creating the piece was positive and I loved the effort everyone put in. most of all, knowing that I had created a tiny segment of the piece, it was something that stuck in my head.

This has completely inspired me to think about doing something like this with the employees. Because the picture tells a story, I could incorporate this idea for the employees to do themselves also. This way, they will be creating, learning, interacting and gaining a sense of pride without having any negative impact on them or revealing any harsh facts.

By doing a visual piece, employees would be able to look at it everyday with the same pride and satisfaction as to when they first did it. This is hugely significant because by putting regular updates on food waste etc. the employees may not feel inclined to want to listen after so long.

If this was to work, there could be the possibility of putting up multiple mosaics over the factory, as well as using the screens to possibly have a slideshow of the mosaics being made, as well as pictures of customers and producers enjoying the fruit.

By presenting the journey of fruit in a fun and non verbal manner, the employees would feel more motivated in their job, knowing that it is being recognised, and that ‘every piece matters’.
