I went to design on illustrator a few of my favourite designs for Vivienne Westwood. Two of my designs I really liked, I tried to implement the jewels and the Saturn ring on the design that looks like a heart. An issue that I as asking myself with this, was whether it looked too feminine for a unisex logo. I really liked the idea and I could see a lot of potential, but I feel that it could make some of the viewers feel it wasn’t appropriate for both genders, despite VW loves her hearts.
I then tried redesigning another logo showing only her initials. The problem I had with this previously been that it looked too much like a corset and portrayed it was revealing an insensitive area of the female body. The logo itself did appear very feminine, and I wasn’t sure on the overall design because I felt it was missing a lot, and the widths of the lines were all in the wrong places. The logo itself also didn’t have enough ‘edge’ to it to reflect on VW and her unique personality.
This logo I really liked initially. I thought it was slightly feminine but it was appropriate for a unisex logo. The widths of the lines were too fragile and did not resemble VW’s strong personality and looked ‘too pretty’.
I began playing around with this design however, because I could see a lot of potential with it. I adjusted the curves at the top and made the lines thicker, taking away the jewels and adding a silhouette of Saturn in the centre. I feel this design still shows VW’s strong personality, and is more appropriate for a unisex logo.
I then played around with adding various typefaces to go with the logo, and Baskerville and Century Gothic, by vote, appeared to be most favoured. My personal favourite is the Baskerville, because of the simple typeface, it allows the logo design to stand out more because it contrasts with it; despite it is more vibrant than a sans serif typeface, it also allows the logo to show itself and keep to that classical timeless feel, which is what Vivienne wants, and going against the rules that everyone else follows. I know she sometimes uses her initials on some products e.g. belts, and the logo could be cut out so only the initials were showing, or could even have still all of the details.
